Google contacts not syncing on iPhone? Here's what to check

Nine times out of ten it's one of four settings. Work through them in order — each takes under a minute.

1. Make sure Contacts is actually turned on for your Google account

Adding a Gmail account to your iPhone doesn't automatically sync its contacts — Mail can be on while Contacts is off.

1. Open Settings → Apps → Contacts → Contacts Accounts (on older iOS versions: Settings → Contacts → Accounts).
2. Tap your Gmail account.
3. Check that the Contacts toggle is green. If it's off, turn it on and wait a minute — your Google contacts should appear in the Contacts app.

2. Check your default account

This is the classic gotcha: new contacts you create go to the default account, which on most iPhones is iCloud. So contacts you save on the phone never show up in Google — not because sync is broken, but because they were never saved to Google in the first place.

Go to Settings → Apps → Contacts → Default Account and see where new contacts are going. Note the trade-off: choosing Gmail means new contacts skip iCloud instead — with Apple's built-in integration you have to pick one side.

3. Remove and re-add the Google account

iOS talks to Google Contacts over a protocol called CardDAV, and that connection occasionally gets stuck — often after a Google password change or a security checkup. The fix is a clean re-add:

1. In Contacts Accounts, tap your Gmail account, then Delete Account. This only removes the account from the phone — nothing is deleted from Google.
2. Restart the iPhone (this clears cached account state).
3. Add the account again via Add Account → Google and re-enable the Contacts toggle.

4. Fix the fetch schedule

Here's the part Apple doesn't advertise: iOS does not push Google contact changes. It fetches them on a schedule. If that schedule is set to Manual, contacts only refresh when you open the Contacts app.

1. Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data.
2. Tap your Gmail account and set it to Fetch (not Manual).
3. At the bottom, set the schedule to Every 15 Minutes.

Also worth ruling out: Low Power Mode pauses background fetching, and a flaky connection will delay it too.

Even with everything configured correctly, Apple's Google integration is fetch-based, one-account-at-a-time, and gives you no visibility into what synced or when. It also can't keep iCloud and Google as full copies of each other — the default-account setting forces new contacts to one side only.
