How to merge duplicate contacts on iPhone

iOS has a built-in duplicate merger since iOS 16 — here's how to use it, what its limits are, and how to stop the duplicates from reappearing next month.

Use the built-in "Duplicates Found" tool (iOS 16 and later)

Open the Contacts app (or the Phone app's Contacts tab).
Tap your own card at the top — if iOS has detected duplicates, a Duplicates Found banner appears right below it.
Tap View Duplicates. You can review each pair and tap Merge, or use Merge All.

Merging combines phone numbers, emails, and photos into one card. It's safe to review pair by pair if you have contacts with similar names — "Merge All" will occasionally combine two different people named, say, "Mum" and "Mum ❤️".

Linking is not merging

If you open a contact and choose Link Contacts, iOS doesn't actually combine anything — it just displays two cards (say, an iCloud one and a Google one) as a single entry on your phone. The underlying duplicates still exist, and Gmail, your iPad, or any other device still sees two separate contacts. Linking hides the mess locally; it doesn't clean it up.

The other important limit

The built-in tool only merges duplicates within the same account. If the duplicate pair is one iCloud contact plus one Google contact — the most common case by far — iOS may only offer to link them, not merge them. That's why the banner sometimes doesn't appear even though your list is visibly full of doubles.

Clean up the Google side too

Google has its own merger, and it's good: go to contacts.google.com, click Merge & fix in the left sidebar, and accept its suggestions. Do this after any vCard import, which is the classic source of Google-side duplicates.

Why the duplicates keep coming back

If you've merged everything twice and they returned, the cause is almost always the same: your contacts live in two accounts (iCloud and Google) that don't truly sync. Every one-time import, "Move to iOS" transfer, or WhatsApp re-scan re-creates the second copy. Merging treats the symptom; the two disconnected lists are the disease.
